Weekly payroll
Fifty-two deadlines a year, none of them movable
Weekly payroll is not monthly payroll done more often. The volume of change is the whole difficulty, and the deadline never moves.
Overview
Why weekly is harder.
A monthly payroll has one cut-off and a reasonably stable set of data. A weekly payroll has fifty-two, and every one of them carries new hours, new starters, leavers, overtime, holiday and absence. There is no slack in the week to recover from a problem.
What makes it work is a fixed timetable, a single agreed way of sending hours, and someone who queries an odd-looking timesheet before it becomes an underpaid employee on Friday.
- A fixed weekly timetable agreed with you
- Hours accepted in the format that suits your business
- Gross-to-net calculation and PAYE
- National Minimum and Living Wage checked by age band
- Overtime, shift premiums and bonuses
- Holiday pay calculated correctly for variable hours
- Statutory sick, maternity and paternity pay
- Starters and leavers processed each week
- Digital payslips issued to employees
- RTI submission to HMRC on or before payday
- Pension assessment and contributions each period
- Reports for your accountant and your records

Questions
Common questions
Yes. Variable hours, different rates by role or shift, overtime multipliers and premium rates are ordinary weekly payroll work. Holiday pay for irregular hours is the part most often calculated incorrectly, and it is one we pay particular attention to.
We will tell you immediately rather than quietly guessing. Where an employee genuinely cannot be processed in time, the options are usually a supplementary run or correcting it in the following week — we will explain both and let you decide.
No. The employer remains responsible for reporting pay and deductions to HMRC on or before payday and for the accuracy of what is submitted. MZ carries out that work on your behalf and stands behind its accuracy, but the underlying obligation stays with you.
